Welcome to Melrose

Beautifully situated at the base of Mount Remarkable, Melrose is a must for bushwalkers, cyclists, bird watchers, 4WD enthusiasts and history buffs.

Bushwalking

Spoilt for choice - discover the wonderful walking trails in and around MelroseMelrose is the perfect base for exploring Mount Remarkable National Park, with its spectacular "Narrows" canyon (where the walls come within three metres of each other), ancient redgums and abundant flora and fauna including the rare and elusive (and incredibly cute) Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby. Walks range from one to five hours and include part of the Heysen Trail that passes through Melrose to the summit of Mount Remarkable (960m) on its journey north. You can also climb to the war memorial for a panoramic view over Willochra Plain, or to Lookout Hill.

Heritage Walk

Bluey Blundstones Blacksmith ShopContinuing the walking theme, the Melrose heritage walk takes you on a journey through time, with carefully restored buildings including Bluey Blundstones Blacksmith Shop and the Melrose Courthouse Heritage Centre. Open every day 2pm-5pm, the Centre offers a great insight into the early judiciary, police and pioneers of the region, as well as legends and stories of the Nukunu people.

Cycling

Over 25km of single track around MelroseMelrose is also home to Over the Edge Sports who are passionate about their single track, wool and chocolate! There's approximately 25km of single track around Melrose plus many more in the nearby districts of Jamestown, Laura, Wirrabarra and Wilmington. Some of the tracks are built on private land but are freely available to the public. Nick Bowman and a Greencorp crew were the first to build the single track over the boiling hot summer of 2005. Loops such as Greener Pastures and Hellrose have become famous for their extreme amounts of fun and frivolity.

Since then the crew at Over The Edge have marked out another 20km and a few have tasted the flavour of these trails like EDGE LOOP, the Big Rhua and Dodging Bullets. The beauty of Melrose is that most of the tracks are accessible from your accommodation whether staying at the pub, cabins, or camping in Melrose or at the Showgrounds. No effort is required to pack up the car each time you want to go for a ride leaving much more time for riding and enjoying the bush.

No room to pack your own bike? No problem. Over the Edge rental bikes are better than ever. No old bangers here - these bikes are top of the range. You get to try out some of the best bikes around. Have you felt how easy it is to glide over rocks on a Spot 29 incher?!! They also supply basic Avanti hardtails for those who just want to cruise the town history tour and the easier tracks.
