Melrose – a Remarkable Place

Beautifully situated at the base of Mount Remarkable, Melrose is a must for  bushwalkers, cyclists, bird watchers, 4WD enthusiasts, history buffs and anyone looking for a great weekend away.  Here’s a few ideas to get you started!

Bushwalking

Melrose is the perfect base for exploring Mount Remarkable National Park. Walks range from one to five hours and include part of the Heysen Trail that passes through Melrose to the summit of Mount Remarkable (960m) on its journey north. You can also climb to the War Memorial for a panoramic view over Willochra Plain, or to Lookout Hill.

Melrose Courthouse Heritage Centre

Open every day between 2pm and 5pm, the Heritage Centre offers a wonderful insight into the early judiciary, police and pioneers of the region, as well as legends and stories of the Nukunu people.

Cycling

Melrose is home to “Over the Edge Sports” and an amazing network of cycling tracks.  Most of these tracks are accessible from your accommodation – no matter where you stay in town.  And, if you don’t have a bike of your own, call into “Over the Edge” in Stuart Street and use one of their top of the range rental bikes.

Wine & Cellars

Discover one of Australia’s newest wine-growing regions – the Southern Flinders Ranges -  producing wines gaining a reputation for quality.  Cellar doors close to Melrose include:  Bundaleer Wines at the North Star Hotel, Bartagunyah Wines and Remarkable View wines within a few kilometres of town, and a variety of local wines at the Mount Remarkable Hotel in Melrose.

Great Places To Eat

Melrose has a number of food outlets including:  Bluey Blundstones Blacksmith Shop, Mount Remarkable Hotel and North Star Hotel.  Please check opening times and bookings may be essential during busy periods.
